My name is Michelle Routhenstein and I am here to help you optimize your health! Feel free to send me an email to say hello, tell me about yourself, or inquire more about how we can work together.
I am a Cardiology Dietitian, Preventive Cardiology Nutritionist, Registered Dietitian Nutritionist, and Certified Diabetes Educator who provides a personalized, whole person approach to science based nutrition to keep you healthy and prevent chronic diseases and their complications!
I graduated cum laude from New York University (NYU) with a Bachelors of Science in Nutrition and Dietetics. I also completed a vigorous clinical residency and graduated with a Masters of Science Degree in Clinical Nutrition from NYU. I have over 10+ years of experience counseling individuals on chronic disease prevention and management. I currently operate a thriving nutrition counseling private practice with a very high success rate.
I have worked in many settings where I have reduced individuals’ risk of heart attacks and strokes by implementing science based nutrition and lifestyle medicine to improve risk factors associated with heart disease. I have worked on the surgical floor of a level-one trauma hospital in NYC where I optimized nutrition therapy for individuals after stroke, heart attacks, stent placement, and open heart surgery. I managed the Nutrition division of kidney failure centers where I created easy to implement and engaging programs to help people adhere to a difficult renal diet while also taking care of their heart (as that is the number one cause of death among people with kidney disease). I worked with private clients at one of Manhattan’s top nutrition private practices where I created personalized, tailored meal plans, and became a partner and cheerleader for my clients to successfully accomplish their goals. I was also the Head of Preventive Cardiology Specialists at Cardiatrics, a heart telemedicine company, where I worked with an interdisciplinary team of doctors and scientists to develop and implement protocols and lifestyle interventions for individuals with risk of heart attacks and strokes.
In addition to managing my practice, I also serve on the medical advisory boards of Forbes Health and the National Menopause Foundation.
Most heart healthy diets are overly restricted in certain macronutrients and micronutrients. This unfortunately leads to several nutrient deficiencies which can actually cause more heart damage! In my heart healthy programs, we work with your tastes and preferences to ensure you are nutrient sufficient. Each person’s heart and body needs certain amounts of specific vitamins, minerals, and macronutrients in order for their blood to flow properly, their heart to beat regularly, and for their heart to do its job optimally. I thoroughly evaluate all of my clients for nutrition deficiencies and excesses, and create a comprehensive plan to enhance their well-being and quality of life.
I am here to listen to your story, and help you better understand your medical condition, medications, and heart disease risk so we can successfully reduce your risk of heart attacks and strokes. I take the time to educate you on the WHY behind my recommendations so you can be successful at achieving your goals and maintaining them for the rest of your life.
My education, training, experience, and true passion is managing and preventing heart disease and it’s complications through science based nutrition and lifestyle behavior change. I specialize in optimizing your blood vessel health since that is the true passage way to reducing your risk of heart attacks and strokes.
The medical conditions I regularly manage with very high success rates include:
My clients get my full attention, enthusiasm, and knowledge, which provides them with the tools necessary to be comfortable in any food situation they encounter. From understanding how to read food labels, to navigating grocery stores, to selecting meals from restaurant menus and social gatherings (work dinner, weddings, parties, etc), to traveling selecting/modifying recipes, and more!
I strive to provide a clear navigation guide to the complicated nutrition world so you can keep enjoying your life without stressing about what to eat!

While I love my career and helping individuals optimize their heart health, I love my family above all else. I am blessed to have a supportive husband and four sweet, funny, and adventurous sons who make me smile everyday.
Outside of work, you can usually find me with my family. From spending time together in the kitchen creating new heart healthy recipes, to exploring nature and animals, to building with legos. If I am not running around with my kids and husband, I am on my Peloton or Tonal getting in a good sweat.
HOW DID YOU GET INTO CARDIOLOGY?
In my dietetic residency and when I first became a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist, I worked in various settings from hospitals, kidney clinics, dialysis centers, weight loss offices, etc where the number one cause of hospitalizations, complications, and death was from heart disease. This empowered me to take action.
We know that heart disease is the #1 killer globally. And we also know that 80% of heart disease can be prevented through science based nutrition and lifestyle change. So why is there a disconnect?
I specialize in cardiology because I have seen the power of science based nutrition save lives and bring quality of life to so many people. I want to change this devastating statistic and I am honored that you are allowing me to guide you.
DO YOU WORK WITH CARDIOLOGISTS AND PRIMARY CARE PHYSICIANS?
Yes, I work closely with various primary care physicians and cardiologists. Some of the cardiologists specialize in lipid disorders of metabolism, others specialize in preventive cardiology, and others are electrophysiologists. If you want me to collaborate with your doctor, I encourage it and I would be more than happy to!
DO YOU LOOK AT MY LABS AND MEDICATIONS?
Of course! Before we meet for our first appointment, I review all of your laboratory parameters and medications! This allows me to personalize and merge the science to allow for optimal results. I like to review multiple years of blood work to get a full story of your metabolic journey.
DO YOU ORDER A BLOOD TEST?
No, I do not. However, I do provide guidance on which lab parameters I would like to see and request from your physician.
DO YOU PRESCRIBE MEDICATIONS?
No, medication management is deferred to your monitoring physician. I oftentimes collaborate with your doctor for optimal care and communication.
DO YOU PROVIDE ME WITH A LIST OF SUPPLEMENTS TO TAKE?
I am a food first health care professional because the research shows that getting all of your vitamins and minerals from food is the best way for your heart health. We also know that certain supplements can contain inflammatory additives and fillers that can impair kidney, liver and heart health. I do recommend certain well-researched supplements for individuals who cannot meet certain nutrient requirements through food.
